Recent Guest Speakers:
At the November meeting, Ian Gully spoke about his very recent walk along the Kokoda Trail. He and other Vietnam Veterans were moved by the difficulties faced by the diggers on the track. His very interesting tale described the endless climbing and descending along extremely steep trails, interrupted only by the numerous deep river crossings. Walking for 8-9 hours each day to cover perhaps 12 km, the walkers were exhausted by the end, and endured constant mud, sweat and slippery conditions.

Professor Villis Marshall, Director of the Centre for Men's Health in SA, gave an eye-opening account of the links between our modern sedentary lifestyle, resulting obesity, and health issues such as diabetes, depression, hypertension, heart disease, even erectile dysfunction. Men traditionally leave their own health to fend for itself, and it is an aim of the Centre to break down that tradition, looking for example at ways in which doctors encourage, or fail to encourage, health checkups by men.

Lions Book  Shed:

Many people like a good read but don’t like the library fines! They check out the Aberfoyle and District Lions Club’s second hand book shed situated in the old CFS green shed between Ackland Hill Road and Winns Road on Main Road, Coromandel Valley?

Every Saturday morning from 9am to noon readers can browse and buy – at very reasonable prices – novels, sports books, humour, biography, cookbooks, etc, etc.  And the prices are practically give away!

We accept all saleable book donations during opening hours only.

Lions Garage Sale:
The Lions' shed on Byards Road at Happy Valley (adjacent to the Community Centre,) is open on the 1st and 3rd Saturday morning of each month, and its small size conceals a host of delights for bargain hunters. Donations of bric-a-brac and small items of furniture, etc, are very much appreciated.
Christmas Cakes and Sleigh:
Our major event each year, the Christmas sleigh (of which there are two,) travels the streets of Aberfoyle and districts from mid November until almost Christmas. It is part of our promotion of Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings, and the whole of our membership joins in. Father Christmas brings delight and a small gift to the many children on our route. We also promote the cakes and puddings in stores and roadside stalls during this period.

Youth of the Year Quest:
Our Club is again seeking entrants to this quest, which encourages the development in local high school students of leadership, sportsmanship, citizenship and public speaking. Entrants have time to prepare, before undertaking an interview with a local panel, and for the finalists, a short presentation at a lions' meeting. Winners can go on to compete nationally.

Barbecues:
We have an active and skilled team of cooks who venture out to shopping centres, retirement villages, and even the Royal Adelaide Show to cook a quick snack for shoppers, or for some groups who have heard of our expertise and engaged us for the purpose!

Sandy Congdon Scholarship:
The Scholarship commenced in 1991 in the memory of a former Lion who passed away in 1990. Applicants must complete year 12/13 and be accepted into tertiary education to qualify for the $500 per annum scholarship, paid over a three year period. They must reside within the service area of the Lions Club, which includes the following suburbs: Aberfoyle Park, Chandlers Hill, Clarendon, Coromandel Valley, Craigburn Farm, Flagstaff Hill, Happy Valley, O'Halloran Hill and Reynella East

Applicants are encouraged to contact the Club via the email link on our site, or the club's postal address.

Lion Mints:
Members are all encouraged to find outlets for this unassuming yet popular sweet. Outlets are serviced regularly by members and a small but constant flow of donations to our supported charities results.
Australia Day Breakfast:
We are proud to support this important event each year, the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony conducted by the Onkaparinga City Council. A free breakfast is provided for all comers, at the Aberfoyle Park Hub shopping centre. It's a great breakfast picnic to start the day with a heartwarming touch of patriotism.

Road Clean-up:
The Lions Club has adopted the stretch of Happy Valley Drive between Black Road and Chandlers Hill Road under the Road Watch programme. Each month, on the 2nd Saturday morning, a small group of members treks the length of the road to keep it an attractive and clean entrance to the area.
SIMBA magazine:
This is the Club's monthly magazine, full of reminders and information for members. Included are background articles, rosters and update reports on all of our activities.
